Measurement and Measuring Instruments

• Measurement: A process to get information about the dimension of a body such as $\text{length}$, $\text{area}$, and $\text{volume}$.
• Unit: The standard quantity utilized to measure a given physical quantity.

Physical Quantities

• Definition: All quantities that can be measured are called physical quantities.
• Examples: $\text{length}$, $\text{mars}$, $\text{time}$, $\text{speed}$, $\text{density}$, and $\text{area}$.

Classification of Physical Quantities

• Fundamental Quantities: Quantities that do not depend on other physical quantities.
  • Examples: $\text{length}$, $\text{mass}$, and $\text{time}$.
  • Units: The units for these quantities are called fundamental units.
• Derived Quantities: Quantities that depend on other physical quantities.
  • Examples: $\text{density}$, $\text{speed}$, and $\text{area}$.
  • Units: The units for these quantities are called derived units.
