Cell Signaling Process
Communication: Cells communicate via chemical signals.
Stages of Signaling: 1. Reception 2. Transduction 3. Cellular Response.
Receptors: Target cells have receptors complimentary to signaling molecules (ligands).
Signal Transduction: Converts receptor change to induce cellular responses; often includes pathways for amplification.
Second Messengers and Kinases
Second Messengers: Small molecules (e.g., cyclic AMP, calcium ions) that facilitate signaling inside the cell.
Protein Kinases: Enzymes that transfer phosphate groups from ATP, activating other proteins and amplifying signals.
Examples of Cellular Responses
Responses can include enzyme activation, cytoskeleton rearrangement, and gene activation.
Insulin's Action: Insulin stimulates glucose uptake in liver and muscle cells.
Quorum Sensing in Bacteria
Quorum Sensing: Bacteria detect population density through signaling; can trigger toxin release.
Insulin Resistance
Type 1 Diabetes: Low insulin production due to pancreas issues; requires insulin injection.
Type 2 Diabetes: Cells become resistant to insulin, leading to high blood sugar levels despite normal insulin production.
Amplification in Signaling
Cascade Effect: One activated kinase can activate many others, leading to significant cellular responses (e.g., thousandfold amplification).
Termination of Signals
Important for preventing overproduction or continuous activation; signaling must be appropriately terminated.
