Cell Signaling Process

  • Signal Transduction: Converts receptor change to induce cellular responses; often includes pathways for amplification.

Second Messengers and Kinases

  • Second Messengers: Small molecules (e.g., cyclic AMP, calcium ions) that facilitate signaling inside the cell.

  • Protein Kinases: Enzymes that transfer phosphate groups from ATP, activating other proteins and amplifying signals.

Examples of Cellular Responses

  • Responses can include enzyme activation, cytoskeleton rearrangement, and gene activation.

  • Insulin's Action: Insulin stimulates glucose uptake in liver and muscle cells.

Quorum Sensing in Bacteria

  • Quorum Sensing: Bacteria detect population density through signaling; can trigger toxin release.

Insulin Resistance

  • Type 1 Diabetes: Low insulin production due to pancreas issues; requires insulin injection.

  • Type 2 Diabetes: Cells become resistant to insulin, leading to high blood sugar levels despite normal insulin production.

Amplification in Signaling
