Divinity of Jesus Christ

Who is Jesus Christ?

  • is the most important question you’ll ever answer; many believe in God but not necessarily in Jesus.

  • The world mostly sees Jesus as another prophet, not supremely important.

  • The speaker asserts that Jesus Christ is God.

    Who is Jesus Christ?

John's Gospel and the Divinity of Jesus

  • John's Gospel provides a unique picture of Jesus.

  • Many people claim to believe various things, but what do they really believe about Jesus?

  • Some speakers aim to prove Jesus is God, using primarily the word of God from John.

Four Questions to Define Jesus

  • The goal is to answer: Who is Jesus Christ?

  • Four key questions will be addressed:

    1. Who did Jesus say he was?

    2. Were his actions consistent with who God is?

    3. What was his relationship with God the Father?

    4. Why did he come into the world?

Who Did Jesus Say He Was?

  • Jesus identified himself as the Good Shepherd: John 10:14 "I am the Good Shepherd, and I know my own, and my own know me."

  • Jesus claimed to be the door of the sheep: John 10:7 "I am the door of the sheep. If anyone enters through me, he will be saved."

  • Jesus proclaimed oneness with the Father: John 10:30 "I and the Father are one," John 12:45 "He who sees me sees the one who sent me."

  • Jesus declared himself the light of the world: John 8:12 "I am the light of the world. He who follows me will not walk in darkness but will have the light of life."

  • Jesus stated he is the way, the truth, and the life: John 14:6 "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father but through me."

Were His Actions Consistent with Who God Is?

  • Jesus always did what pleased the Father: John 8:29 "I always do the things that are pleasing to him, to the Father."

  • Jesus came to give abundant life: John 10:10 "I came that they might have life and have it more abundantly."

  • Miracles such as feeding 5,000, healing the sick, raising the dead, and walking on water demonstrate his power.

  • Jesus forgave sins, which provoked the religious leaders since only God can forgive sins.

  • Jesus has the authority to lay down his life and take it up again: John 10:18 "No one can take his life from him; he has authority to lay it down, and he says, 'I have authority to take it up again.'"

  • Jesus came to do the will of the Father: John 6:38 "For I have come down from heaven not to do my own will but the will of him who sent me."

What Was His Relationship to God the Father?

  • Genesis 1:26 "Let us make man in our own image" suggests the Trinity: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.

  • Jesus said, "I and the Father are one": John 10:30.

  • Knowing Jesus is knowing the Father.

  • John 14:16 indicates the coming of the Holy Spirit as another helper, just like Jesus, sent by the Father.

  • John 1:1 identifies Jesus (the Word) as being with God and as being God.

  • Jesus was the creator with the Father: John 1:3 "All things came into being through him."

  • Colossians 1:14-17 describes Jesus as the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation, by whom all things were created.

  • John 6:38 states Jesus came down from heaven to do the Father's will, to die on the cross and save us from sin.

  • John 14:11 "I am in the Father, and the Father is in me."

  • John 5:36 "The very works that I do testify about me that the Father has sent me."

  • John 8:29 "I always do the things that are pleasing to him."

The World's View of God vs. the Biblical View

  • The world often views God as a distant, impersonal entity.

  • People want a God who is impersonal enough that they can sin without feeling guilty.

  • Without Jesus and the Holy Spirit, there cannot be the one true God.

  • Jesus said, "I and the Father are one." If you don't believe Jesus is God, you don't believe in the one true God.

  • Many haven't seen Jesus; thus, they have a distorted view of God.

  • There is only one God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, three persons of the Trinity, each with a different role.

  • People often desire a God they can control in their minds.

Why Did He Come Into the World?

  • Jesus came that we might have life and have it more abundantly.

  • People want a God who pacifies them and agrees with them, not one who interferes with their lives.

  • If it's not the God of the Bible, it's not the true God.

  • John wrote his Gospel to describe Jesus intimately.

  • A relationship with Jesus begins with asking for forgiveness and surrendering your life to Him.

Consequences of Rejecting Jesus

  • John 3:16: God gave his only Son so that whoever believes in him will have everlasting life.

  • God sent Jesus to walk in human flesh to remove any excuse for disbelief.

  • If you don't have Jesus, you'll realize only He matters when you come to die.

  • Without a spiritual relationship with Jesus, you will not see the kingdom of God.

  • If a person does not believe in Jesus, something about Him interferes with their lifestyle.

  • Rejecting Jesus means facing judgment without Him.

What If Jesus Is Not God?

  • Jesus would be untruthful about his relationship with the Father.

  • Jesus cannot be trusted.

  • His death has no effect upon us; we are still in our sins.

  • The resurrection is a false claim, and there is no assurance of life after death.

  • Christianity is just another world religion.

  • Without Jesus, we are hopeless and helpless.

The Truth: Jesus Is God

  • Jesus' words and actions result in the forgiveness of sins, the gift of eternal life, and heaven as our home.

  • God is Jesus, the Father, and the Holy Spirit: three persons of the Trinity.

  • The Holy Spirit enables us to live a godly life.

Final Appeal

  • Examine your life and belief system honestly.

  • Turn from false beliefs and accept Jesus Christ as your personal Savior.
