  • Definition: (adj) utterly hopeless and miserable

  • Example: “There is abject violence and crime that affects the lives of many living in Chicago.”

Page 3: Admonish

  • Definition: (v) to warn or reprimand someone firmly

  • Example: “The teacher admonished the students about using AI for their essays but they did it anyway and ended up getting a zero.”

  • Definition: (v) to persuade with flattery

  • Example: “The student cajoled the teacher by complimenting her dress before asking for an extension on the assignment.”

Page 5: Conciliatory

  • Definition: (adj) intending to appease or make concessions; willing to compromise

  • Example: “After being unable to come to a compromise, the two sides had to be more conciliatory to get things done.”

  • Definition: (adj) lacking in confidence; shy or timid

  • Example: “The diffident student didn't raise her hand the whole year even though she knew all the answers; she was too diffident.”
