"O Romeo, Romeo! wherefore art thou Romeo? / Deny thy father and refuse thy name! / Or, if thou wilt not, be but sworn my love, / And I'll no longer be a Capulet."
Who says this and the meaning?
- juliet
- this means that she wants romeo to give up his name as a montegue. otherwise if he didn't want to do so, all he would need to do is swear his love to her and she would give up her name as a capulet
"With love's wings did I o'perch these walls; / For stony limits cannot hold love out, / And what love can do, that dares love attempt. / ==Therefore== thy kinsmen are no let to me."
who says this and the meaning?
- romeo
- juliet told him that her kinsmen will kill him if and when they see him there. he tells her that love can surmount any obstacle and challenge, and it was the power of love that he used to get to her.
"But soft! What light through yonder window breaks? / It is the East, and Juliet is the sun! / Arise, fair sun, and kill the envious moon, / Who is already sick and pale with grief that thou her maid art more fair than she."
who says this and what is the meaning?
- romeo
- he sees her standing on the balcony and compares her beauty to that of the sun. he tells her she's more beautiful than the moon, which he describes as envious and sick with grief. he uses symbolism and metaphors to convey the depth of his feelings for juliet.
marriage during the 1500s
marriages were arranged to benefit both families involved
- financially, properties, wealth
women had very little, if any, choice in who her husband might be. It was considered foolish to marry because you were in love.
Romeo
son of Montague
falls in love with Juliet
extremely lovesick
- in love with rosaline first
believes in love at first sight
Juliet
Daughter of Capulet
falls in love with romeo
pulled away from childhood when her mother tells her she Is of age to get married
- does not want to marry the people her parents force upon her
Lady Capulet
Juliet's mother, Capulet's wife
A woman who herself married young (by her own estimation she gave birth to Juliet at close to the age of fourteen)
eager to see juliet marry Paris
ineffectual mother, relying on the Nurse for moral and pragmatic support.
Paris
A handsome count who is a kinsman of Prince Escalus
boring, pompous, and obsequious but wealthy
Capulet believes that if Juliet marries him, their family's fortunes and social standing will advance.
Rosaline
never appears onstage
at the start of the play, Romeo's latest romantic obsession despite the fact that she has taken a vow of chastity
When Romeo meets Juliet, however, he forgets all about his unrequited love for Rosaline.
Tybalt
Capulet's nephew and Juliet's cousin
a duelist whose skills with a rapier (sword) have gained him widespread renown
temper is equally as famous as his talent
- Hotheaded, brash, and devoutly loyal to his house
hates all Montagues and longs to kill them on sight.
Friar Lawrence
philosophical friar of Verona who keeps finding himself as an arbiter between the two families
Romeo and Juliet like the friar and come to him separately on several occasions for advice and favors
clearly uncomfortable with his role as arbiter, but at the same time, he longs to bring peace to his community, and believes that in uniting Romeo and Juliet he may be able to end the fight between their families
marries romeo and juliet secretly in hopes of bringing all of Verona together, blind to what the larger consequences of his actions may be.

Juliet's faithful confidante and loyal intermediary in Juliet's affair with Romeo
has been caring for Juliet since she was born
loves Juliet deeply and, though employed by Juliet's parents, Capulet and Lady Capulet, often goes against them in order to do what Juliet wants or needs of her.
Mercutio
one of the play's most dynamic and complex characters
Wild, frenetic, easygoing, and fun-loving, Mercutio's manic energy, rambling stories, and razor-sharp wit masks a much darker core
quick with words and is one of the play's most skilled masters of puns and wordplay—he is always ready with a scandalous joke or a bawdy tale
but deep down, the play suggests that Mercutio is long past tired of his role as Romeo's jester.
Benevolio
Romeo's cousin, a Montague and friend to Mercutio
wants to avoid confrontation
presented throughout the play as cautious and careful
Capulet
obsessed with appearances and social standing, and is willing to put the grudge aside in order to create the illusion of calm
One such instance of this occurs when Tybalt suggests brawling with the Montagues in the middle of the Capulets' annual masquerade, and Capulet orders him to refrain in order to keep up appearances
plans to use his only daughter, Juliet, in order to advance their family's social capital by marrying her off to Paris.
