Organ systems
The human body has 11 organ systems, each with specific functions:
Integumentary System: Protects and regulates the body; includes skin, dermis, glands, hair, nails.
Skeletal System: Provides structure, protection, and blood cell production; consists of bones, cartilages, ligaments, tendons and joints.
Muscular System: Enables movement, posture, and generates heat; includes skeletal, smooth, and cardiac muscles.
Nervous System: Regulates and coordinates sensation and movement; includes the brain, spinal cord, sensory receptors and nerves.
Endocrine System: Regulation and maintenance of growth, metabolism and hormones, ; includes pituitary, thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal, pineal, ovaries, testes and pancreas
Cardiovascular System: Circulates blood, transports nutrients and waste, immune function ; includes the heart, blood and blood vessels.
Lymphatic System: Supports immune function, circulatory functions, and fat absorption; includes vessels, nodes, spleen, thymus tonsils and lymph tissue.
Respiratory System: Facilitates breathing; includes lungs, nasal passages, pharynx, larynx and bronchi.
Digestive System: Mechanical and chemical breakdown of ingested foods and absorption; includes the mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestines, larges intestines, salivary glands, liver, gallbladder, and pancreas.
Urinary System: Eliminates waste, regulates pH, and water balance; includes kidneys, ureters, urethra and bladder.
Reproductive System: Produces offspring, sex cells, and sex hormones; includes reproductive organs:
Male- Testes, prostate, scrotum, penis and the duct system
Female- Ovaries, uterine tubes, uterus, mammary glands and vagina
