Azure Budget Control & SQL

Budget Control
  • Creating a Budget:

    • Through Azure portal, under Cost Management.

  • Configuring Alerts:

    • Establish spending thresholds.

    • Set up email notifications.

DB as a Service - Postgres
  • Overview:

    • IaaS (you pay for the server).

    • PaaS (Microsoft manages it).

      • Microsoft manages underlying servers.

      • Microsoft maintains the service.

    • Not \"serverless.\"

  • Basics:

    • Creating a New Server:

      • Specify server details (name, region, PostgreSQL version).

      • Select workload type (Development/Production).

      • Choose authentication method (Microsoft Entra, PostgreSQL, or both).

      • Configure compute/storage.

      • Set admin login/password.

  • Networking:

    • Connectivity Method:

      • Public access (allowed IP addresses).

        • Firewall rules (port 5432).

        • Allow Azure service access.

        • Add client IP address.

      • Private access (VNet Integration).

  • Creation:

    • Use default security settings initially.

    • Add tags if desired.

    • Finalize creation.

  • Connection:

    • Via psql db account (firewall configured!):

      • Set environment variables.

        • PGHOST: Server hostname.

        • PGUSER: Username.

        • PGPORT: Port number (5432).

        • PGDATABASE: Database name.

        • PGPASSWORD

      • Connect via psql utility.

    • Via psql and Entra account (firewall configured!).

    • JDBC Connection:

      • Connect via JDBC (SSL/TLS and firewall configuration required!).

  • Stopping and Starting:

    • Instances can be stopped.

    • Not \"serverless\" behavior.

DB as a Service - SQL Server (Azure SQL Database)
  • Overview:

    • For modern cloud apps.

    • High uptime, predictable performance.

  • Key Features:

    • Single database/elastic pool options.

    • Hyperscale storage (100TB+).
