Understanding a Healthy Body (Adapted for 4th Grade)

When your body is healthy, it works really well! You might not even think about it. You can get up in the morning, breathe, laugh, dance, grow, fight off sickness, and live your life! But what makes your body healthy, and how does it stay that way?

In a healthy body, all the parts work together to make sure every small part (cell) gets what it needs to be healthy. This includes important things like oxygen, glucose, and amino acids.

What are these?

  • Oxygen: This is what we breathe in from the air. It helps keep our bodies alive.
  • Glucose: This is a kind of sugar that gives us energy. We get glucose from foods like fruits, vegetables, and grains (like bread or rice).
  • Amino Acids: These are the building blocks of proteins that help our bodies grow. We get amino acids from protein-rich foods like beans, meat, and eggs.

How does our body use these?

  • Our bodies use oxygen, glucose, and amino acids as fuel. This means they help our body function every day!
  • If we don’t have enough of these important parts, our cells can’t do what they need to do, and that can make us sick.

It’s important to eat healthy foods and breathe in fresh air to keep your body working well!
