week 5: accommodation and housing

Essay questions:

to what extent does reducing homelessness after prison reduce reoffending/ enhance desistance

to what extent does social housing enhance desistance/ reduce reoffending

To what extent does stable accommodation reduce reoffending

Present at three key time points:

  • upon imprisonment

    • loss of property entering prison

  • near release

    • loss of landlord contact,

  • once released

    • accumulating debt, challenging housing landscape, benefit/ welfare problem, lack of accommodation advice, private rented sector issues,

    • limited social housing, stigma

  • purposeful activity set within the approved premises such as gardening

  • very minimal are privately run

  • these are options available to everybody, not just in prison

  • NFA

    • not having a stable address means you reach the criteria for NFA

  • contextual factors that might also influence where the person lives and their probability of reoffending

  • emphasising that the type of accommodation a person lives in really influences and effects the probability of reoffending
