Comprehensive Multi-Subject Study Notes
Biology
- Xylem and Phloem Functions:
- Xylem cells: Transport water from roots to leaves during transpiration.
- Phloem: Transports sugars during translocation.
- Electron Microscopes: Provide higher magnification and higher resolution.
- Magnification Formula:
Magnification=Size of real objectSize of Image
- Diffusion: The spreading out of particles of any substance in solution or gas, resulting in a net movement from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration.
- Exchange Surface Adaptations:
- Small Intestine: Long with villi for a large surface area, thin cell membranes for a short diffusion pathway, a rich blood supply to maintain a steep concentration gradient, and lots of mitochondria.
- Lungs: Lots of alveoli for a large surface area, thin membranes for a short diffusion pathway, and good ventilation and blood supply to maintain a steep concentration gradient.
Mathematics
- Gradient (m): Represents the steepness of a line (how far it goes up per one square across).
- Formulas:
m=acrossgradient upm=x1−x2y1−y2
- Example Calculation: For points (1,5) to (4,15), m=4−115−5=310 (gradient = 3).
- Line Properties:
- Horizontal lines have a gradient of 0.
- Vertical lines have an undefined gradient.
- Parallel lines have the same gradient.
Physics
- Internal Energy: Total energy stored by the particles in a system, combining kinetic energy (how fast) and potential energy (spread out) stores.
- Boiling vs. Evaporation:
- Boiling: Occurs at only one temperature, takes place throughout the liquid, and its rate depends on the heat supply rate.
- Evaporation: Occurs at all temperatures, takes place from the surface only, and its rate depends on temperature, surface area, and wind/breeze.
- Force in a Gas: Increased by adding more particles or increasing temperature (causes higher kinetic energy and more forceful collisions).
Chemistry
- Mixtures: Two or more elements or compounds not chemically bonded together; can be separated by filtration or distillation.
- Atomic Models & Discovery Timeline:
- Plum Pudding Model: Positively charged circular model with negatively charged electrons evenly spread out; developed after discovering the electron.
- Alpha Particle Scattering Experiment: Showed atomic mass is concentrated at the center and the nucleus is charged; led to the Nuclear Model.
- Niels Bohr: Adapted the nuclear model by proposing that electrons orbit the nucleus at set distances.
- James Chadwick: Proved the existence of neutrons in the nucleus.
- Subatomic Particle Relative Charges:
- Proton: +1
- Neutron: 0
- Electron: −1
- Atoms have no overall charge because the number of protons and electrons are equal.
Religious Education
- Attributes of God:
- Omnipotent: All-powerful.
- Omniscient: All-knowing (past, present, and future).
- Omnibenevolent: All-good / all-loving.
- Omnipresent: Present everywhere.
- Immanent: Here and now (interacting with the world).
- Transcendent: Beyond the limits of human experience, knowledge, and understanding.
- Merciful: Forgiving and compassionate.
- Monotheism: Belief in one God (termed Tawhid in Islam).
History
- 1851 Indian Appropriations Act: Allocated money to indigenous people to move to specified areas in Oklahoma and encouraged them to become farmers.
- 1851 Fort Laramie Treaty: Indigenous people agreed to safe passage for travelers to Oregon and California and allowed building forts along routes in exchange for $50,000 for 50years.
- 1862 Little Crow's War: Little Crow and Dakota Sioux ceded land to move onto a reservation for money and supplies. Reservation agents withheld goods; starving indigenous people attacked the agency in August 1862, burning buildings and killing 600 settlers and soldiers. Indigenous people were subsequently moved to worse lands.
- 1864 Sand Creek Massacre: Gold discovery in Colorado (1858) led Black Kettle and indigenous groups to agree to move, but Dog Soldiers resisted mining on sacred land. Colonel Chivington ordered troops to "kill and destroy" hostile indigenous people; on 29November 1864, 700 US troops attacked Black Kettle's camp.
Personal Development
- Migration Topics and Statistics:
- Migrants constitute 25% of the British population.
- Global migration is rising; the UK's aging population presents a far greater problem than migration.
- On average, migrants pay more taxes than UK workers and contribute significantly to public services.
- Key points of discussion include claims regarding prison demographics, job market impacts, welfare and health service burdens, housing shortages/prices, wage impacts, and refugee/asylum seeker proportions.
- Flowcharts: Visual illustrations showing the sequential order of a process.
- Advantages: Shows clear paths to achieve intended products, highly logical, aids organization, and identifies potential problems.
- Disadvantages: Can become overly complex with too many options, must be redone if changes or mistakes occur, and requires knowledge of components to understand functionality.
- Flowchart Components:
- Terminator: Represents the start and end.
- Process: Indicates an action taking place.
- Decision: Shows choices to be made.
- Input / Output: Allows adding or removing data.
- Arrow: Displays direction of flow.
