1. Checking Brakes Before a Journey
Should not feel spongy/slack.
Test as you set off.
Vehicle should not pull to one side.
2. Tyre Pressures
Find info in manufacturer’s guide.
Use reliable pressure gauge.
Check when tyres are cold.
Don’t forget spare tyre & valve caps.
3. Head Restraint Adjustment
Rigid part at least eye level or top of ears.
As close to back of head as comfortable.
Some may not be adjustable.
4. Tyre Safety & Tread Depth
No cuts/bulges.
1.6mm tread depth across central ¾ of tyre.
Check entire outer circumference.
5. Checking Headlights & Tail Lights
Operate switch, turn on ignition if needed.
Walk around vehicle to check.
6. Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) Fault
Warning light illuminates if faulty.
7. Checking Indicators
Operate switch, turn on ignition if needed.
Walk around vehicle to check.
8. Checking Brake Lights
Press brake pedal.
Use reflections in windows/doors or ask for help.
9. Power-Assisted Steering Check
If steering is heavy, it may not be working.
Two checks:
Gentle pressure on wheel when starting engine – should move slightly.
Turning wheel just after moving off – should feel light.
10. Rear Fog Lights & When to Use
Operate switch, turn on dipped headlights/ignition if needed.
Check warning light is on.
Use when visibility is below 100m.
11. Switching to Main Beam
Operate switch, turn on ignition/engine if needed.
Check main beam warning light.
12. Checking Engine Oil (Bonnet Open)
Identify dipstick/oil level indicator.
Check against min & max markers.
13. Checking Engine Coolant (Bonnet Open)
Identify high & low markings on header tank or radiator cap.
Top up if below minimum.
14. Checking Brake Fluid (Bonnet Open)
Identify reservoir.
Check level against high & low markings.
