Hobbes Leviathan Part1

Chapter 13: The Natural Condition of Mankind

  • Equality of Men

    • Men are equal in physical and mental capacities despite individual differences.

    • The weakest man can overcome the strongest through alliances or cunning methods.

    • Self-perceptions often inflate one’s own wisdom compared to others.

  • Causes of Discord

    • Three principal causes of conflict:

      • Competition - Men become enemies for scarce resources.

      • Distrust - Fear leads men to preemptively attack others for security.

      • Glory - Desire for recognition prompts violence, either through direct confrontation or by establishing dominance.

  • State of War

    • In the absence of common power, individuals exist in a condition of war, where law and justice are non-existent.

    • This condition leads to continuous fear, preventing progress in society or relationships.

  • Consequences of War

    • No guarantee for the fruits of labor; destruction of properties and lives leads to a state of being solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short.

Chapter 14: The First and Second Laws

  • Right of Nature

    • Each man has the liberty to use his power for self-preservation—acting for life and well-being.

  • Law of Nature

    • A law discovered by reason that forbids actions destructive to one’s life and obliges individuals to seek peace.

  • First Law

    • Seek peace and follow it.

  • Second Law

    • Man must be willing to lay down his right to everything to achieve peace, allowing the same for others.

  • Contracts and Covenants

    • Mutual transferring of rights forms a contract; rights can be renounced or transferred through explicit and implicit agreements.
