Overview of the Medulla

  • The medulla is a part of the brain primarily made up of myelinated axons.
  • This structure facilitates communication within the brain and with the body.
  • Axons are responsible for relaying action potentials, which communicate signals to other neurons and body parts.

White Matter and Axon Function

  • White matter consists of bundles of myelinated axons.
  • These axons form tracts that enable communication between different brain structures.
  • The communication occurs between the cortex and lower central nervous system structures (e.g., the spinal cord).

Major Fiber Types in the Medulla

  • Three Main Types of Axonal Fibers:
    • Commissural Fibers:
      • Connect gray matter areas between the left and right hemispheres.
      • Example: Corpus Callosum, which allows communication between the two hemispheres.
    • Association Fibers:
      • Connect gray matter areas within the same hemisphere.
      • They do not cross over between hemispheres (e.g., connections on only the left or only the right side).
    • Projection Fibers:
      • Project from the cerebrum to lower brain and spinal cord structures.
      • They run vertically (upward & downward), facilitating communication from higher brain centers to lower structures.
      • Example: Corona Radiata, named for its crown-like structure, which radiates out.

Basal Nuclei

  • Composition:
    • Clusters of neuron bodies located within the medulla, which appear as gray matter islands amidst the white matter.

      • Motor function
      • Attention
      • Cognitive functions (starting, stopping, modulating tasks, and coordinating movements)
    • Impact on conditions like ADD and ADHD, where individuals may struggle with task initiation, modulation, and coordination of motor functions.
