Aside from its reproductive role, the flower is typically the most beautiful and conspicuous part of the plant structure. Botanically, a flower is defined as a specialized shoot in which the leaves have been modified into specific floral structures.

The flower is supported by a stalk known as the pedicel. While many flowers possess this stalk, some flowers are described as sessile, meaning they are without a stalk. The tip of the pedicel may be enlarged to form a cup-shaped structure called a receptacle or thalamus. This thalamus serves as the base upon which the four distinct whorls of floral parts are borne.

The Four Floral Whorls

The arrangement of a bisexual flower consists of 44 distinct whorls. These whorls are categorized based on their position and their role in the reproductive process.

  1. The First Whorl: This is the outermost layer, consisting of green sepals. Collectively, the sepals are referred to as the calyx.

  2. The Second Whorl: This layer is composed of large, brightly-coloured petals. Collectively, the petals are known as the corolla.

  4. The Fourth Whorl: The innermost whorl consists of the female reproductive parts, indicated by the symbol \female. Centrally located, this is the pistil, which may be formed of a single female unit called a carpel or several fused carpels. Collectively, these are called the gynoecium.

Detailed Anatomy of Reproductive Parts

The male reproductive unit, the stamen, is characterized by its thread-like filament which supports the bilobed anther at its tip. The female reproductive unit, the carpel, consists of three distinct parts: a basal swollen ovary, a middle elongated style, and an uppermost receptive tip called the stigma. Within the ovary, the ovules are housed, which are critical for the formation of seeds.

Classification: Complete and Incomplete Flowers

Flowers can be classified based on the presence or absence of these whorls. A complete flower, also referred to as a perfect flower, is one that contains all 44 floral whorls (calyx, corolla, androecium, and gynoecium). If any one or more of these sets of floral whorls are missing, the flower is classified as an incomplete or imperfect flower.

Essential versus Non-Essential Whorls

Floral parts are further categorized based on their direct involvement in reproduction:

  • Essential (Reproductive) Parts: These are the whorls directly concerned with the reproduction of the plant. They consist of the stamens (male parts) and the carpels (female parts).
