Chapter 12 lesson 4

Conquest of Eastern Lands

  • Objective of German Expansion: The Nazis sought to expand their territory in Eastern Europe to create living space for the German Empire and promote Aryan growth.
  • Role of Heinrich Himmler: As the head of the SS, Himmler was tasked with the resettlement of lands, forcibly removing local populations and replacing them with Germans.
  • Tactics of Forced Displacement: This involved:
  • Labor camps for those who resisted removal.
  • Executions for non-compliance.

Forced Labor

  • Scale of Forced Labor: By summer 1944, about 14 million Europeans were under forced labor, with 7 million in Germany and another 7 million across Europe.
  • Non-Jewish Labor: Besides the Jewish population, many others classified as inferior were subjected to labor.

Anti-Semitism and Genocide

  • Hitler's Blame: Hitler blamed Jews for Germany’s WWI defeat and the resulting economic hardships, including the Treaty of Versailles.
  • Final Solution: The Nazi plan of genocide against Jews aimed to annihilate every individual with Jewish heritage.
  • Einsatzgruppen: Mobile killing units responsible for rounding up Jews, forcing them into ghettos, starving, and executing them.

Ghettos and Camps

  • Ghettoization: Jews were confined to impoverished neighborhoods with walls, restricted from leaving, and provided only minimal food.
  • Transition to Death Camps: As extermination efforts escalated, six major death camps were established, with Auschwitz being the largest.
  • Death Rate at Auschwitz: 30% sent to labor, 70% exterminated or subjected to medical experiments.

Nazi Medical Experiments

  • Ethics Violations: Nazis conducted inhumane medical experiments without prior testing on animals, aiming to achieve Aryan physical characteristics.
  • Examples of Experiments:
    • Eye color alterations.
    • Height enhancement surgeries without anesthesia.
    • Testing new medicines with harmful side effects.
  • Experience of Victims: Many survivors reported that these experiments were worse than death.

Mass Killings

  • Scale of Jewish Deaths: Approximately 6 million Jews were killed—90% of the Jewish population in Poland, Germany, and the Baltic states.
  • Deaths of Other Groups: Between 9-10 million non-Jewish individuals were killed through shootings, forced labor, starvation, and abuse in camps, including:
  • 3 to 4 million Soviet POWs.
  • 4 million Polish, Ukrainian, and Belarusian slave laborers.

Japan in WWII

  • Japanese Aggression: Japan’s imperial ambitions led to the invasion of multiple territories, creating the Great East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere.
  • Deception Tactics: Japan initially disguised themselves as Chinese soldiers in Manchuria to justify their invasion.
  • Extent of Occupation: Japan occupied countries, including Korea, Manchuria, and parts of China, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific Islands.

Occupation Policies**

  • Mutual Benefit Propaganda: Japan claimed occupation would benefit both itself and the countries involved, which was largely a false narrative.
  • Reality of Occupation:
  • Severe hardship for local populations.
  • Forced labor and destruction of homes.
  • Loss of government control and economic autonomy.
