Required practical 1

Method Summary

  1. Measure the mass of the beaker.

  2. Insert:

    • Immersion heater

    • Thermometer

  3. Add a small amount of water/oil in the beaker and measure the initial temperature and weight (improves thermal contact).

  4. Wrap block in insulating foam to reduce energy loss to the surroundings.

  5. connect joulmeter to the immersion heater.

  6. Turn heater on for a measured time.

  7. Record final temperature and number of joules of energy that passed through the immersion heater

Calculate energy supplied:

specific heat capacity = (change in thermal energy)/mass x temperature change

Measurements Needed

  • Mass (kg)

  • Temperature change (°C)

  • Power of heater (W)

  • Time heated (s)
