Unit 3 Vocab Definitions

Vocabulary:

1. Culture - the practices, customs, traditions, and beliefs of a group of people.

2. Cultural Diffusion - the spread and intermixing of cultures.

3. Animism - belief of ancient humans was that all things in nature were animated or “alive.”

4. Religion - a set of beliefs, usually having to do with God or a higher power.

5. Oral tradition - the spread of knowledge or information through speaking out loud.

6. Filial Piety - respect and honor for parents, elders and ancestors.

7. Hierarchy - a system in which people or groups are ranked according to status or authority.

8. Ethics - moral principles that guide one’s behavior.

9. Civilization - a complex society.

10. Classical Era - a period between 600 BCE and 300 CE marked by a rise in powerful civilizations, formal religions, and worldwide trade.

11. Zoroastrianism - the monotheistic religion practiced in Ancient Persia. Focused on the idea of Order vs Chaos.

12. Philosophy - an intellectual method for helping us to understand ourselves and the world we live in.

13. Art - something that has been created by humans that tends to express beauty or ideas.

14. High Culture - the set of cultural activities practiced by the Upper Classes (Rich).

15. Popular Culture - set of cultural activities practiced by the majority of the population.

16. Renaissance - a cultural movement that began in the 1400’s in Italy characterized by an interest in Classical Greece and Rome.

17. Alexander the Great - Macedonian King and General, who unified Greece and conquered much of the Middle East.

18. Monumentality - a massive building, statue or site to commemorate an important person or event.
