Anatomy of Vascular Structures

  • Function of the Circulatory System:
    • Transports gases, nutrients, and essential substances to tissues.
    • Carries waste products from cells to excretion points.

Components of the Vascular System

  • Arteries:

    • Carry blood away from the heart.
    • Divide into smaller branches into arterioles which lead into capillaries, forming networks for material exchange.
    • Blood from capillaries is collected in venules, which unite into larger veins returning blood to the heart.
  • Veins:

    • Carry blood towards the heart, appearing collapsed due to less elastic tissue.
    • Have larger diameters than arteries and contain valves to prevent backflow.

Structure of Blood Vessels

  • Artery Layers:
    • Tunica Intima (inner layer):
    • Endothelial cell layer, delicate connective tissue, elastic fibers.
    • Tunica Media (middle layer):
    • Contains smooth muscle fibers with elastic and collagenous tissue.
    • Tunica Adventitia (outer layer):
    • Loose connective tissue, with smooth muscle and elastic tissue.
    • Vasa Vasorum: Tiny vessels supplying the walls of blood vessels.

Major Arteries and Their Branches

  • Aorta:
    • Major artery divided into five sections:
    1. Root of the aorta
    2. Ascending aorta and arch
    3. Descending aorta
    4. Abdominal aorta and its branches
    5. Bifurcation into iliac arteries
    • Anterior Branches:
    • Celiac Trunk: Supplies the stomach and part of the duodenum.
      • Branches: Common hepatic artery, left gastric artery, splenic artery.
    • Superior Mesenteric Artery (SMA): Supplies proximal half of the colon and small intestines.
      • Branches include inferior pancreatic artery, duodenal artery, colic arteries.
    • Inferior Mesenteric Artery: Supplies left transverse colon, descending colon, sigmoid colon, and rectum.

Characteristics of Veins

  • Appear as collapsed tubes with thin walls and larger diameters than arteries.
  • Have valves to assist blood movement to the heart against gravity.
  • Blood moves more slowly in veins compared to arteries.

Abdominal Apartum

  • Renal Arteries:
    • Right renal artery flows directly to the inferior vena cava.
    • Left renal vein may be longer as it crosses anterior to the aorta.

Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms

  • Definition: Permanent localized dilation of an artery, with a diameter increase > 1.5 times normal.
  • Types:
    • True Aneurysms: Involve all three layers of the vessel wall.
    • Pseudoaneurysms: Result from trauma, with blood collected in surrounding tissue.
  • Risk Factors: Tobacco use, hypertension, vascular diseases, adn genetics.

Doppler Flow and Vascular Imaging

  • Doppler Flow Analysis:
    • Determines blood flow presence, direction, and characteristics.
  • Vascular Doppler Techniques:
    • Nonresistive vessels (e.g., renal artery) show continuous flow while resistive vessels (e.g., external carotid) exhibit little or reversed diastolic flow.

Portal Venous System

  • Portal Vein: Formed by the union of the superior mesenteric vein and splenic vein, transporting blood from the gastrointestinal tract to the liver.
  • Portal Hypertension: Results from obstructions, leading to collateral vessels and symptoms like ascites and varices.
  • Cavernous Transformation: Chronic blockage leads to formation of new venous pathways around the thrombosed portal vein.
