Moving Synovial Joints
The human body consists of various types of freely movable synovial joints, classified based on the kinds of motion they accommodate as well as the degree of flexibility. There are six distinct types of movable synovial joints, each facilitating specific types of movement.
Types of Synovial Joints
Ball-and-Socket Joint
Definition: A ball-and-socket joint allows movement in all directions. It consists of the rounded end of one bone (the ball) fitting into a hollow cavity or depression in another bone (the socket).
Examples: The hips and shoulders are prime examples of ball-and-socket joints.
Movement Capability: Although ball-and-socket joints provide a wide range of motion, they are also more prone to dislocations. For instance, a fall can easily cause dislocation of the shoulder due to the joint's wide range of movement.
Hinge Joint
Definition: A hinge joint permits movement in one direction around a single axis, resembling a door hinge.
Examples: Common hinge joints include the elbows, knees, and fingers.
Movement Capability: This type of joint allows for extension and flexion, contributing to activities such as straightening the arm or bending the knee.
Pivot Joint
Definition: A pivot joint consists of a rounded projection on one bone fitting into a depression on another bone, enabling rotational movement from side to side.
Examples: The pivot joint in the neck allows the skull to rotate on the spine.
Movement Capability: This joint type is crucial for rotational movements, such as shaking the head to signify “no.”
Saddle Joint
Definition: A saddle joint allows for a wide range of motion between two articulated bones that possess a saddle-like shape.
Example: The carpometacarpal joint located at the base of the thumb is a splendid example, which grants the thumb its unique range of motion and capability for opposition.
Movement Capability: This joint type is significant for grasping and pinching objects due to the opposability of the thumb.
Gliding Joint
Definition: A gliding joint is established between two corresponding flat bones. These bones glide past one another in multiple directions along the plane of the joint, facilitated by ligaments.
Examples: Gliding joints are found in the wrist (known as intercarpal joints), ankles (intertarsal joints), and various locations within the vertebral column.
Movement Capability: Despite their limited range of typical movement, gliding joints permit complex gliding motions, which accommodate movements in an up-and-down, left-and-right, or diagonal manner.
Condyloid Joint
Definition: A condyloid joint is characterized by an oval articular surface of one bone fitting into the oval depression of another articulating bone.
Examples: The radiocarpal joint of the wrist and the metacarpophalangeal joints at the base of the fingers exemplify condyloid joints.
Movement Capability: Condyloid joints allow for movement in two planes, facilitating a variety of motions such as flexion, extension, abduction, and adduction.
