Background Radiation
Radiation is all around us
Natural Sources of Radiation
- Radioactive Rock → Found in the ground e.g, graphite
- Cosmic rays from space →Very high energy particles which travel through space and crash into the Earth’s atmosphere e.g supernova
Man-made Sources of Radiation
- Fall out from nuclear weapons testing → It has released radioactive isotopes into the environment for decades
- Nuclear accidents → Radioactive isotopes are released by accidents at nuclear power station
Radiation Dose
- The dose of radiation is measured in sieverts (Sv)
- One millisievert (mSv) is 1/1000/ divided by 1000 of a sievert
