Digestion in the Monogastric Mouth
Dual Digestive Capabilities of the Mouth:
The mouth is capable of performing both mechanical and chemical digestion simultaneously.
Not all digestive organs can perform both types.
Mechanical Digestion in the Mouth:
Mastication: The formal scientific term for chewing.
Mechanism: Jaw muscles exert force on teeth to break food particles down mechanically.

Chemical Digestion in the Mouth:

The Esophagus:
Anatomical Structure: A muscular tube connecting the throat to the stomach.
Motility Mechanism: Peristalsis.
Definition: Wave-like muscle contractions that propel food through the esophagus toward the stomach.
Important Distinction: Esophageal muscle contractions perform physical transport via peristalsis, NOT mechanical breakdown of food.
Esophageal Mucus and Protection:
Secretes significant amounts of mucus.
Dual Functions:
Provides lubrication for smooth movement of the food bolus.
Provides acid protection; contains bicarbonate (bicarb) to neutralize stomach acid that may reflux back into the esophagus.
