VOCABULARY

CONTEMPTUOUSLY - in a way that shows strong dislike or a lack of respect for someone or something

BELATEDLY - in a way that comes later than expected

CALLOUSNESS - behaviour that is unkind, cruel, and without sympathy or feeling for other people

SIMPLETON - a person without the usual ability to use reason and understand

UNENTERPRISING - not good at thinking of and doing new and difficult things, especially things that will make money

ADJACENT - very near, next to, or touching

COGITATION - the act of thinking very carefully about a subject, or the thoughts themselves

AFFINITY - a liking or sympathy for someone or something, especially because of shared characteristics

BESTOW - to give something as an honour or present

CHURNED UP - describes someone feeling emotionally disturbed, anxious, or upset

ALIGNMENT - an arrangement in which two or more things are positioned in a straight line or parallel to each other

FEROCIOUS - frightening and violent

VERTIGO - a feeling of spinning around and being unable to balance, often caused by looking down from a height

RELUCTANT - not willing to do something and therefore slow to do it

CONUNDRUM - a problem that is difficult to deal with

AVUNCULAR - kind and friendly towards a younger or less experienced person

ACQUAINTANCE -a person that you have met but do not know well

BELLIGERENCE - the wish to fight or argue

UNRECIPROCATED - not sharing the same feelings as someone else, or not behaving in the same way as someone else

INADEQUATE - not good enough or too low in quality

INFIDELITY - having sex with someone who is not your partner

MONOGAMY - having a relationship with only one partner

INGENUITY - someone's ability to think of clever new ways of doing something

FATHOM - to discover the meaning of something

AFFINITY - a natural liking for and understanding of someone or something

QUEUE - a line of people, usually standing or in cars, waiting for something

CONFECTIONERY - sweets or chocolate

To RUN RIOT - behave in a violent and unrestrained way

SKIVING - to be absent from work or school without permission

SCOWL - to look at someone or something with a very annoyed expression

SQUILLION - a very large number or amount

GRIN - a wide smile

SOGGY - unpleasantly wet and soft

DEADBEAT - a person who is not willing to work, does not behave in a responsible way, and does not fit into ordinary society

INGENUITY - someone's ability to think of clever new ways of doing something

ANAGRAM - a word or phrase made by using the letters of another word or phrase in a different order

To be PATRONIZING - speaking or behaving towards someone as if they are stupid or not important

SULKY - refusing to smile or be pleasant to people, usually because you are angry about something

INTROSPECTIVE - examining and considering your own ideas, thoughts, and feelings, instead of talking to other people about them

TRANSFORMATION - a complete change in the appearance or character of something or someone, especially so that that thing or person is improved

PERSPECTIVE - a particular way of considering something

RESILIENCE - the ability to be happy, successful, etc. again after something difficult or bad has happened

DYNAMICS - forces that produce movement or change

NARRATIVE - a story or a description of a series of events

SUBPLOT - a part of the story of a book or play that develops separately from the main story

UNCONVENTIONAL - different from what is usual or from the way most people do things

CRITIQUE - to give an opinion or judgment about a piece or work, book, film, etc.

EXPLORATION - the activity of examining something to find out more about it

ALOOF - not friendly or willing to take part in things

ACCESSIBILITY - the fact of being able to be reached or obtained easily
