Untitled Flashcards Set

1. The Four Aspects of the Paschal Mystery

  • Passion: Jesus’ suffering before his death—includes the agony in the Garden, betrayal, arrest, and trials.

  • Death: Jesus' crucifixion; seen as the ultimate sacrifice for humanity’s sins.

  • Resurrection: Jesus rises from the dead; central belief in Christianity that shows God’s power over sin and death.

  • Ascension: Jesus' return to Heaven 40 days after the Resurrection, marking the completion of his earthly mission.

🔹 2. Jesus’ Entry into Jerusalem

  • Occurred on Palm Sunday.

  • People welcomed him like a king—laid down cloaks and palm branches.

  • He entered humbly on a donkey, fulfilling Old Testament prophecy (Zechariah 9:9).

🔹 3. Anointing at Bethany

  • A woman anoints Jesus with expensive perfume.

  • Seen as an act of love and preparation for his burial.

  • Jesus praises her, saying she has done a “beautiful thing.”

🔹 4. The Last Supper and Passover

  • Took place during the Passover meal.

  • Jesus reinterprets the meal:

    • Bread = His Body

    • Wine = His Blood

  • Connects to Passover lamb: Just as the lamb’s blood saved the Israelites, Jesus’ sacrifice saves humanity.

  • Mark’s Gospel: Focuses on the Institution of the Eucharist.

  • John’s Gospel: Instead of Eucharist, emphasizes the washing of feet—symbol of service and humility.

🔹 5. Garden of Gethsemane

  • Jesus prays to God, deeply troubled but submits to God’s will.

  • Disciples fall asleep; shows their human weakness.

  • Jesus is arrested here.

🔹 6. Arrest, Trial, and Crucifixion

  • Arrested by temple guards.

  • Trial before the Sanhedrin (Jewish leaders) and then Pilate (Roman governor).

  • Accused of blasphemy and treason.

  • Crucified at Golgotha—mocked, but remains faithful to God.

🔹 7. Women at the Cross

  • Most male disciples flee, but women stay.

  • Mary (Jesus’ mother), Mary Magdalene, and others remain faithful.

  • Shows courage, faithfulness, and true discipleship.

🔹 8. The Resurrection

  • Jesus rises on the third day.

  • Core of Christian faith—proves Jesus is the Son of God.

  • Victory over death and sin.

🔹 9. Women as First Witnesses

  • Mary Magdalene is the first to see the risen Jesus.

  • In a society where women’s testimony wasn’t valued, this highlights their importance in spreading the Gospel.

🔹 10. Jesus Appears to His Disciples

  • Appears in various places: the road to Emmaus, locked room, by the sea.

  • Thomas doubts until he sees and touches Jesus’ wounds—then declares, “My Lord and my God!”

🔹 11. The Ascension

  • Occurs 40 days after the Resurrection.

  • Jesus blesses the disciples and is taken up to Heaven.

  • Prepares them to receive the Holy Spirit.

🔹 12. The Great Commission (Matthew 28:20)

  • Jesus tells disciples: “Go and make disciples of all nations…”

  • Promises: “I am with you always.”

  • Call to evangelize and spread the message of love and salvation.
