What is Motion?

  • Definition: Motion can be defined as change in position across time.

  • Indicated as a fundamental concept in perception and cognition, serving as the basis for understanding dynamic interactions in our environment.

Applications of Motion

Form from Motion
  • Motion is utilized to derive forms and shapes in our perceptual experiences.

  • It helps in recognizing the configuration and arrangement of objects based on their movement dynamics.

Motion Perception
  • Definition: The perception of motion is a crucial cognitive process, wherein moving stimuli are processed to create a sense of dynamics in the environment.

  • Motion Inducing Blindness: A phenomenon where sustained observation of moving objects can cause transient blindness or difficulty in perceiving stationary stimuli.

Types of Motion

  1. Real Motion    - Definition: Actual displacement in space where an object moves across the visual field.

  2. Apparent Motion    - Definition: A perceptual illusion where stationary objects are perceived as moving due to the rapid succession of visual frames.[motion perception video frames]    - Examples: film projection, animation, and the use of technologies that use static images presented in quick succession to simulate motion.

  3. Induced Motion    - Definition: The perception of motion induced by the movement of surrounding objects in the visual field. When a background moves, stationary objects appear to move in the opposite direction.

  4. Motion Aftereffects    - Definition: A phenomenon where after staring at a moving object, gazing at a stationary object causes the latter to appear as if it is moving in the opposite direction.

The Wagon Wheel Illusion

  • Description of the Illusion: The wagon wheel effect displays an illusion of reversed motion based on the frame rates at which the images are presented.   - At different speeds, the perceived motion of the spokes can appear clockwise, counterclockwise, or static.

  • Mechanism: It utilizes static frames or flickering light sources, highlighting discrepancies in frame rates to evoke an illusory perceived motion.

Motion Aftereffects Explained

  • If a person fixates on a moving object (e.g., a downward-moving stimulus), the neurons that respond to downward motion (the down detectors) become fatigued due to continuous stimulation.

  • Upon returning gaze to a stationary target, an imbalance occurs resulting in increased excitation of upward motion detectors.

A Simple Motion Detector

  • Constructing a Motion Detector Cell:   - Components Overview: Neuron A detects initial motion, Neuron B registers a delayed response; the sequence of activations differentiates directionality of perceived motion.

  • Reichardt Detector Model:   - The Reichardt detector functions to differentiate motions by correlating the input signals from each neuron at different times - essentially an integration of inputs for directional discrimination.

Coincidence Detection and Motion Direction
  • Rightward Motion Detection: When Neuron A is triggered before Neuron B, a detection of rightward motion occurs, confirmed by signal coincidence.

  • Leftward Motion Non-Detection: Lack of coincidence when reading leftward motion results in non-response from the motion detector.

  • The method allows for differentiation between small and large objects based on motion detection.
