The fundamental unit of textile production is the fiber, referred to in Japanese as 繊維 (senisen'i) and in Indonesian as serat. This broad category encompasses all filamentary materials used to create yarns and fabrics. In a commercial and industrial context, fibers are primarily distinguished by their origin, categorized either as naturally occurring substances or those produced through chemical manufacturing processes. The collection of terms provided below covers the basic classification system used in the textile industry to identify these raw materials.

Classification and Varieties of Natural Fibers

Natural fibers, known as 天然繊維 (tennensenitennen\,sen'i) or serat alam, are materials obtained directly from nature without chemical synthesis. These are further categorized based on their biological source. Fibers derived from plants are termed 植物繊維 (shokubutsusenishokubutsu\,sen'i) or serat tumbuhan. A primary example of a plant-based fiber is 木綿 (momenmomen), which is cotton (kapas or katun), the most widely used natural fiber globally. Another significant group of plant fibers is 麻 (asaasa), which includes rami and linen. Specifically, the fiber known as ramie or rami is identified as ラミー (ramıˉramī).

Beyond plant-based materials, natural fibers also include those derived from animal sources. Key examples include 羊毛 (yoˉmoˉyōmō), which refers to wool (wol) sourced from sheep, and 絹 (kinukinu), which refers to silk (sutera) produced by silkworms. These materials are valued for their specific textures, warmth, and luxury applications in high-end garment manufacturing.

Chemical and Synthetic Fiber Categories

Fibers created through industrial and chemical processes are grouped under the term 化学繊維 (kagakusenikagaku\,sen'i), meaning chemical fiber or serat kimia. This category is subdivided into several groups depending on the level of synthesis and the raw materials used. The most common subcategory is 合成繊維 (goˉseisenigōsei\,sen'i), or synthetic fiber (serat sintetis), which are entirely man-made from petroleum-based chemicals. Common synthetic varieties include ポリエステル (poriesuteruporiesuteru) or polyester, ナイロン (naironnairon) or nylon, and アクリル (akuriruakuriru) or acrylic (akrilik). Another prevalent synthetic is スパンデックス (supandekkususupandekkusu), commonly referred to as spandex or elastane, which is utilized for its exceptional stretch and recovery properties.

In addition to pure synthetics, the industry utilizes 再生繊維 (saiseisenisaisei\,sen'i), or regenerated fiber (serat regenerasi). These are produced by dissolving natural materials like wood pulp and extruding them into new fibers. A well-known example of this is レーヨン (reˉyonrēyon) or rayon. Another specific type of man-made fiber is アセテート (asuteˉtoasutēto), or acetate (asetat), which is a semi-synthetic fiber derived from cellulose treated with acetic acid.

Yarn Production and Intermediate Processes

Once fibers are harvested or manufactured, they are processed into yarns for weaving or knitting. The terminology for these products depends on the structure of the strand. フィラメント糸 (firamentoshifiramento-shi) refers to filament yarn (benang filamen), which is composed of long, continuous strands like silk or synthetic extrusions. Conversely, 紡績糸 (boˉsekishibōseki-shi) refers to spun yarn (benang pintal), which is created by twisting together short, staple-length fibers such as cotton or wool.

In modern textile manufacturing, it is common to combine different types of fibers to take advantage of the strengths of each material. This process is known as 混紡 (konboˉkonbō), which translates to fiber blending or campuran serat. Through blending, manufacturers can create fabrics that are both durable and comfortable, such as a cotton-polyester blend.
