2. Stable and unstable nuclei
Strong force :
- overcomes the electrostatic force of repulsion between the protons in the nucleus and keep the protons and neutrons together.
- Has a small range of 3-4 femtometres whereas electrostatic force between particles has an infinite range
- has the same effect between two protons as it does between two neutrons and a proton and a neutron
- At separations less than 0.5fm it becomes a repulsive force
Beta radiation - consists of fast moving electrons
Neutrinos and antineutrinos carry away energy released when beta particles are released
