2. Stable and unstable nuclei

Strong force :

• overcomes the electrostatic force of repulsion between the protons in the nucleus and keep the protons and neutrons together.
• Has a small range of 3-4 femtometres whereas electrostatic force between particles has an infinite range
• has the same effect between two protons as it does between two neutrons and a proton and a neutron
• At separations less than 0.5fm it becomes a repulsive force

 Beta radiation - consists of fast moving electrons

Neutrinos and antineutrinos carry away energy released when beta particles are released
