Aeronautical Experience and Eligibility Requirements for the Private Pilot Certificate

  • Aeronautical Experience (§ 61.109)

    • A minimum of 40 hours of total flight time is required.

    • 20 hours of flight training must be received from an authorized instructor.

    • 10 hours of solo flight time is required, specifically including:

    • 5 hours of solo cross-country time.

    • 3 hours of night flight training, which must include a cross-country flight over 100 NM total distance and 10 takeoffs and landings to a full stop (each involving a lap in the pattern).

    • 3 hours of flight training in a single-engine airplane focusing on controlling and maneuvering solely by reference to instruments. Areas covered include: straight and level flight, constant airspeed climbs and descents, turns to a heading, recovery from unusual flight attitudes, radio communications, and use of navigation systems/radar services.

    • 3 hours of flight training in preparation for the practical test, performed within the preceding 2 calendar months.

  • Eligibility Requirements (§ 61.103)

    • Must be at least 17 years old.

    • Must be able to read, speak, and write in the English language.

    • Must hold a U.S. Student Pilot Certificate, Sport Pilot Certificate, Recreational Pilot Certificate, or a Private Pilot Certificate in a different category/class.

    • Must meet the aeronautical experience requirements and comply with sections applying to the aircraft category and class rating sought.

    • Logbook Endorsements: Must receive an endorsement from an authorized instructor who:

    • Conducted the training for the knowledge exam or reviewed a home study course.

    • Conducted training in the areas of operation listed in § 61.107(b).

    • Certified the person is prepared for the required practical test.

Recency of Experience and Special Aircraft Endorsements

  • General Recency Requirements (§ 61.57(a))

    • To carry passengers, a pilot must have made 3 takeoffs and 3 landings within the preceding 90 days.

    • The pilot must be the sole manipulator of the controls.

    • The aircraft used must be of the same category and class (and type, if a type rating is required).

Private Pilot Privileges, Limitations, and Solo Requirements

  • Requirements to Solo (§ 61.87)

    • Aeronautical Knowledge Test: Must pass a test administered by the student's instructor covering make/model flight characteristics, operational limitations, and airspace rules/procedures for the specific airport. The instructor must review all incorrect answers.

    • Pre-solo Flight Training: Must have received and logged training for maneuvers including: Preflight procedures, taxiing/run-ups, takeoffs/landings (normal and crosswind), straight and level flight, turns, climbs, airport traffic patterns, collision/wind-shear/wake turbulence avoidance, descents, flight at various airspeeds (cruise to slow flight), stall entries and recoveries (from first indication and full stall), emergency procedures, ground reference maneuvers, simulated engine malfunctions, slips to a landing, and go-arounds.

    • Endorsements: Must have a logbook endorsement for the specific make and model, issued within the 90 days preceding the flight.

    • Solo at Night (§ 61.87(o)): Requires night-specific training (takeoffs, landings, go-arounds at the airport) and a night-specific logbook endorsement within the preceding 90 days.

NTSB Reporting and Legal Definitions

  • National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) Rule Part 830.2

    • Aircraft Accident: An occurrence between boarding with intention of flight and disembarking in which any person suffers death or serious injury, or the aircraft receives substantial damage.

    • Hospitalization for more than 48 hours commencing within 7 days of injury.

Pilot Documents, Airspace, and Legal Responsibilities

  • Category, Class, and Type

    • Category (Airmen): Broadest classification (e.g., Airplane, Rotorcraft, Glider).

    • Class: Classification within a category (e.g., Single-engine Land, Multiengine Sea).

    • Type: Specific make and basic model (e.g., C172, B737).

  • Required Documents to be in Possession (§ 61.3)

    • Inversion: Abrupt change from climb to level flight feels like tumbling backward.

    • Autokinesis: Staring at a stationary light in the dark makes it appear to move.

  • Alcohol (§ 91.17): Limit is 0.04%0.04\% blood alcohol and "8 hours bottle to throttle."

  • Medical Certificates (§ 61.23)

    • First Class: Required for ATP. Valid 12 months (under 40) or 6 months (40+).

    • Second Class: Required for Commercial. Valid 12 months.
