Energy Transformation (bio 9)
All living things are able to use energy for biological processes. Since energy cannot be created or destroyed, it is reused throughout different processes
Stored energy is called potential energy. Example: something at the top of the hill
Energy of motion is called kinetic energy. Example: something rolling down a hill
Three types of cellular work are chemical, mechanical, transitive
the ultimate source of energy for organisms is light. (Light Energy)
Organized into waves, The shorter the wave, the more energy, the longer the wave, the less energy
Two other sources of energy consumed by certain bacteria are hydrogen sulfate and ammonium
Autotrophs make energy from the sun. The two types of autotrophs are plants and algae.
Heterotrophs consume things for energy. Examples are animals.
Metabolism is how fast things process energy/food
Photosynthesis is catabolic.
Cellular respiration is anabolic.
If ATP loses one phosphate group, it’s now ADP. Adding a phosphate makes it ATP once more.
ATP releases energy by losing a phosphate.
The advantage of ATP is that it is reusable.
When ATP releases a phosphate, it releases energy and becomes heat.
From our perspective, energy flow is one way and elements are cyclic.
