  • SDRAM (Synchronous Dynamic RAM): This is the original type of RAM that works in sync with the system clock, making it reliable for performing tasks at each clock tick. It has 168 pins and two notches.

  • DDR RAM (Double Data Rate SDRAM): This type of RAM doubles the data rate by transferring data twice per clock cycle. It has 184 pins and one notch. The speed is often shown as DDR followed by a number (e.g., DDR-400).

  • DDR2 RAM: An improved version of DDR, it doubles the speed again using a technique called prefetch. It has 240 pins with a slightly different notch position from DDR.

  • DDR RAM: This version doubles the speed of DDR2 and also uses 240 pins, but with a different notch position to prevent incorrect installation.

  • DDR4 RAM: The latest and fastest type covered in the course, with 288 pins and a unique notch position. It offers the highest speeds and is the most common in modern systems.

  • RAM Capacity: RAM (Random Access Memory) is measured in bytes. Modern RAM capacities are typically in gigabytes (GB), like 4GB, 8GB, or 16GB.

  • Single-Sided vs. Double-Sided RAM: Single-sided RAM has chips on one side, while double-sided RAM has chips on both sides. Some motherboards may have issues with double-sided RAM, so it's important to check compatibility.

  • RAM Slots and Channels: Motherboards have multiple slots for RAM sticks. These slots are often organized into channels (like dual-channel or triple-channel). For optimal performance, you should install RAM sticks in pairs and follow the motherboard's instructions for which slots to use

  • Mixing RAM: While it's possible to mix different sizes of RAM in different channels, it's best to use RAM sticks of the same size and speed for each channel to avoid compatibility issues.

  • Parity vs. ECC RAM: Think of RAM as a bookshelf with 8 slots (chips) for books (data). Parity RAM adds an extra slot (chip) to check for errors, while ECC RAM can correct errors in up to two slots. It's like having a librarian who not only checks for missing books but can also replace them if they are damaged. ECC RAM is more common in servers because it's more reliable but also more expensive.

  • SO-DIMMs: These are smaller RAM sticks used in laptops. They work the same way as regular RAM but are just smaller to fit in compact spaces.

  • Serial Presence Detect (SPD): Every RAM stick has a tiny chip that stores information about the RAM, like its size and speed. It's like a label on a book that tells you its title, author, and number of pages. Tools like CPU-Z can read this information to help you understand what kind of RAM you have and if you can add more.

  • Check Compatibility: Ensure you have the right type of RAM for your motherboard. For example, if your motherboard supports DDR RAM, make sure you have DDR4 sticks.

  • Identify Slots: Look at your motherboard to see the RAM slots. Each slot has a notch that matches the notch on the RAM stick.

  • Insert RAM:

  • Push the RAM stick straight down into the slot until the tabs on the sides click into place.
