How can teachers create inclusive schooling environments that embrace cultural and linguistic diversity? Drawing from sociology of education research (plus relevant course readings and additional lecture readings), identify and discuss three strategies teachers can use and unpack the merits associated with these strategies.
MY ARGUtMENTS
To create inclusive language environments in schools, teachers must implement curriculum that is relevant to a variety of cultures to create a connection with students.
Teachers must familiarise themselves with the innate skills, knowledge, and values that students possess as a result of their cultural background and upbringing.
Inclusive assessment practices should be further established in education. As D’Marte asserts, communication is multi-modal, and is often done through dance, music, and art in many cultures. Those who cannot express themselves through English as their second language should be given the chance to excel through other means, and connect with peers and educators through other means.
