Pomona Elementary Reading Program 2025-2026 (Alvin ISD A-List)

Overview of the A-List Reading Program

  • Description: The Alvin ISD A-List Reading Program is an optional reading initiative for students in Kindergarten through 5th grade.
  • Purpose: Designed to encourage reading by providing a curated list of recommended books appropriate for children’s age levels.
  • Book Selection: The book lists are chosen annually by Alvin ISD elementary librarians.
  • Access to Lists: Current grade-level lists can be accessed on the campus website under the library tab.

Program Mechanics

  1. Book Checkout:

    • Students can check out books from the A-List during weekly library visits.
    • Some selected books are also available at the public library.
  2. Post-Reading Tasks:

    • Students must complete a task after reading at home.
      • For K-2nd grades:
      • Option to complete the task on paper or through Beanstack.
      • If using paper, the completed packet must be returned to the library by April 30th.
      • For 3rd-5th grades:
      • Students are required to complete the task through Beanstack only.
    • Independent Work:
      • It is important for students to complete the tasks independently, as this promotes writing skills.
      • Assistance is permitted, particularly for younger students.
  3. Incentives for Participation:

    • Students who meet their reading goals will receive an invitation to a surprise party at the end of the school year.
    • Final Submission Deadline: All tasks must be completed by Thursday, April 30th.
    • The program is optional but is expected to provide students with enjoyable reading experiences.

  • For Kindergarten and 1st grade, paper packets for the A-List challenge can be printed by scanning the QR code provided or requested from their teachers.

Reading Goals by Grade Levels

  • Kindergarten - 1st Grade:

    • Goal: Read all 10 books from the Level 1 list.
    • Tracking: Students will log their books and complete the task via Beanstack Challenge or included paper packet.
    • Incentive: Completion of all 10 books will result in an end-of-year celebration.
  • 2nd - 3rd Grade:

    • Goal: Read all 10 books from the Level 2 list plus an additional 5 books.
      • The additional 5 books can be sourced from either Level 1 or Level 3 lists.
    • Tracking: Books logged and tasks completed via Beanstack; 2nd graders also have paper packet options.
    • Incentive: Reading a total of 15 books will earn an end-of-year celebration invitation.
  • 4th - 5th Grade:

    • Goal: Read all 10 books from the 4th-5th grade list plus 10 more books.
      • Extra books can be selected from Level 1 or Level 3 lists.
    • Tracking: Must log books and complete tasks via Beanstack.
    • Incentive: Reading all 20 books leads to an invitation to the end-of-year celebration.

    • K-2: Reach out to the homeroom teacher for password inquiries.
    • 3-5: Students should be familiar with their passwords.

Logging Books and Minutes for A-List Challenge

  • Instruction provided on how to log books for the A-List Challenge.
  • Instructions on logging reading minutes for the Monthly Reading Challenge included.
  • Packet Printing:
    • Scanning or access via the provided resources for Level 1 and Level 2 packets.

Rewards and Recognition

  • Celebration: A surprise party is planned for students who successfully complete their reading goals for their grades.
  • Recognition: Students will receive a medal during an awards ceremony honoring their achievements.
  • Special 5th Grade Trophy:
    • Students who read all 30 A-List books will receive a trophy recognizing their accomplishment.

Note on Tracking Reading Minutes**

  • 1-for-2 Tracking:
    • When logging and completing tasks for the A-List, students can also track and log reading minutes.
    • Minutes logged for reading one book can count towards both the A-List Challenge and the Monthly Reading Challenge.
