Imagery and Similes

IMAGERY

Imagery is the use of words to create pictures or images in the reader’s mind. They appeal to the five senses: smell, sight, touch, hearing and taste. They’re six types of imagery:

  • Sound Imagery

  • Smell Imagery

  • Sight Imagery

  • Taste Imagery

  • Touch Imagery

Example: The cat’s fur was as soft as feathers

SIMILES

A simile describes one thing as being another. Similes often use ‘like’ and ‘as’. They can make your writing more interesting and help the reader imagine what you are describing.

Example: The snow covered the house like a blanket, She was as tall as a mountain
