Overview of Neutralization
Neutralization Process - Mixing of an acid and base results in the formation of salt and water.

Properties of Acids and Bases
Acid Characteristics:
pH < 7
Example: Hydrochloric Acid (HCl)
Base Characteristics:
pH > 7
Example: Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH)
Neutral Solution:
pH = 7
Example: Sodium Chloride (NaCl) in water

pH Indicators:

Example combinations:
H₂SO₄ + NaOH: any indicator

Titration in Neutralization
Definition: A quantitative chemical analysis method to determine the concentration of an unknown acid or base solution.
Components:
Titrant: Strong base solution of known concentration.
Analyte: Strong acid whose concentration needs to be determined.
Equivalence Point: The point at which the titrant completely neutralizes the analyte.
Procedure and Indicators in Titration
Titration Process Steps:
Fill a burette with the titrant.
Use a pipette to measure the analyte into an Erlenmeyer flask.
Add an indicator to the analyte solution.
Slowly add titrant from the burette until the change in color indicates the equivalence point.
Indicators:
pH indicators change colors based on the solution’s acidity or alkalinity.
Commonly used indicators include phenolphthalein and methyl orange.
Determining the End Point
Color Change in Indicators: The endpoint of the titration is determined by a visible color change in the solution, signaling that neutralization is complete.
