4.1- consolidation of power 

Governmental changes
  • eliminated the federal system and replaced them with Nazi officials
  • this was consolidated with the First law for the coordination of the federal states in March 1933, this dissolved any existing state assembly with a nazi official
  • The second law for the coordination of the federal states in April 1933
  • this added a reich governor to oversee each assembly and make sure they were complying with the regime
  • Law for the reconstruction of the reich in January 1934, abolished state assemblies, placed government states under the control of the reich government, reich governors weren’t abolished.
  • Reichstrat abolished on the 14th February 1934
Creation of a one party state
  • KPD - outlawed after the reichstag fire, leader Thalmann arrested, 10%killed by Nazi’s in 1933, members often sent to concentration camps
  • SPD - outlawed on 22nd June 1933 because they were deemed to be a ‘party hostile to the nation and state’
  • Centre - willingly disbanded on 5th June 1933
  • DNVP - willingly disbanded on 27th June 1933
  • the law against the formation of new parties July 1933
Night of the Long Knives
  • SA had a 3 million membership in 1934 which rose from 500,000 in 1933
  • they felt as though Hitler’s end to the revolution wasn’t enough and wanted a ‘second revolution’
  • Aimed to merge the army and the SA to create ‘peoples army’
  • their violence was important to Hitler gaining power
  • Hitler wanted them gone as Hindenburg threatened to use marshal law in order to deal with the SA’s violence
  • Night of the long knives conducted to remove all SA officials and all political opponents. 84 executed and 1000 arrested.
  • Hitler claimed he ‘saved the country against a political coup’ which gained him popularity in voters.
Hindenburg’s death
  • died 2nd August 1934
  • within an hour of his death Hitler announced the merge of chancellor and presidential office
  • 19th august a plebiscite was held to get the peoples approval of this. 89.9% voted yes but 10.1% said no suggesting there was still retaliation against Hitler.
