Taste Buds are sensory organs located on the tongue responsible for the perception of taste.
They are found in structures called papillae, which can be of different types: foliated, fungiform, and circumvallate.
Each taste bud consists of taste receptor cells that interact with tastants (substances that can be tasted) to send signals to the brain.
The anatomy of taste buds includes:
Terminal Sulcus: The groove that separates the body of the tongue from the base.
Median Sulcus: A central groove running down the tongue.
Taste perception is influenced by various factors including temperature, texture, and smell.

Taste is primarily detected through five basic taste modalities:
Sweet: Detected by sugars and certain other substances.
Sour: Typically associated with acidity (e.g., citric acid).
Salty: Related to the presence of sodium ions.
Bitter: Often identifies toxic substances; detected by various chemical compounds.
Umami: A savory taste, often associated with amino acids like glutamate.
Taste buds communicate with the brain via cranial nerves, primarily through:
Facial Nerve (VII): Responsible for taste in the anterior two-thirds of the tongue.
Glossopharyngeal Nerve (IX): Responsible for taste in the posterior one-third.
Vagus Nerve (X): Involved in taste sensation in the throat region.
The process of taste perception involves both chemical and electrical signals, resulting in the overall flavor experience when combined with olfactory (smell) information.
