Notes on Publics in Public Relations
DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC RELATIONS
Topic: Publics in Public Relations
1. Definition of Publics
Publics refers to groups of people that have a shared interest or concern, or can be affected by an organization's activities. These are crucial in Public Relations because they help determine the focus and direction of communication strategies.
2. Types of Publics
It is important to identify and briefly explain at least four types of publics which may include:
Internal Publics: These are individuals within the organization, such as employees and management, who are directly impacted by internal communications and organizational policies.
External Publics: Comprising people outside the organization, such as customers, suppliers, and the general public, external publics can influence the organization's reputation and success.
Primary Publics: Groups that are directly affected by an organization’s actions, and their opinions are critical to the organization's performance.
Secondary Publics: These are groups that may not be directly affected by an organization’s decisions but still hold an influence over the primary publics or the organization’s goals (e.g., media, community influencers).
3. Importance of Identifying Publics
Organizations must identify their publics to plan effective PR activities because:
Tailored Communication: Understanding different publics allows the organization to tailor messages that resonate with each specific group, thus increasing engagement and effectiveness of the communication.
Crisis Management: Knowing which publics are affected during a crisis can help prioritize communication strategies to address concerns and mitigate damage.
Strategic Planning: Identifying publics is essential for strategic planning, enabling the organization to allocate resources appropriately and set realistic goals for future initiatives.
4. Practical Example
Ghanaian Organizational Example: A pertinent example could be the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), which communicates with various publics:
Internal Publics: Employees through internal newsletters and meetings.
External Publics: Media updates and community engagement through public forums and press releases to keep the public informed about their initiatives.
