The Mexican-American War

  • Sam Houston → 1st president of Texas

  • “Gone to Texas!:

    • 1821 → mexico wins independence from spain

    • encourages settlers from US to emigrate to tejas (texas), northernmost region of mexico

    • to bring them, land grants are offered to “agents” (Stephen F. Austin) to sell potential settlers and bring them to Texas

    • 12.5 cents/acre (very cheap!)

  • Empresarios

    • empresario system → agreement with mexican government allow Stephen F. Austin to bring 300 American Catholic families to Texas in 1821 (most end up not being catholics)

    • president John Quincy Adams offers to buy for $1M, then president andrew jackson offers to buy Texas for $5M (both are turned down)

  • “Once in Texas…”

    • settlers began to establish their own communities, leading to a growing sense of independence and a desire for self-governance. once they get to Texas, settlers simply have to follow mexian laaws and rules

    • American settlers set up a provisional state government of Texas, and in December atteacked MExican garrison in San Anti=onion and fdorive it out of San Antonio and across Rio Grande

    • mexican forces under santa anna regrouped and on feb 23, 1836, reentered San

  • "Remember the Alamo!”

    • April 1836 → Sam Houston rallies 910 American troops at San Jacinto to attack Mexican army

    • Mexicans are routes (over 600 die) - Santa Anna captured

    • Treat of Velasco - Texas is given its independence from Mexico, although Mexico later refuses to acknowledg the treaty
