to bring them, land grants are offered to “agents” (Stephen F. Austin) to sell potential settlers and bring them to Texas

empresario system → agreement with mexican government allow Stephen F. Austin to bring 300 American Catholic families to Texas in 1821 (most end up not being catholics)
president John Quincy Adams offers to buy for $1M, then president andrew jackson offers to buy Texas for $5M (both are turned down)
“Once in Texas…”
settlers began to establish their own communities, leading to a growing sense of independence and a desire for self-governance. once they get to Texas, settlers simply have to follow mexian laaws and rules

Mexicans are routes (over 600 die) - Santa Anna captured
Treat of Velasco - Texas is given its independence from Mexico, although Mexico later refuses to acknowledg the treaty
