Corporate Aviation Notes
Business Aircraft
Business aircraft encompass a wide variety of types, from propeller-driven planes to jets and helicopters. The fleet includes aircraft ranging from small piston aircraft capable of flying a few hundred miles to jets that can seat over a dozen people and make non-stop international flights. The majority of business aircraft seat six passengers in a cabin about the size of a large SUV and fly an average stage length of less than 1,000 miles. Depending on their capability, these aircraft may fly at altitudes below the airlines (below 20,000 feet) or above the airlines (above 40,000 feet).
Piston Engine Aircraft
Piston airplanes are equipped with one or more piston-powered engines connected to a propeller to generate thrust. These aircraft typically fly at altitudes below 15,000 feet, with interiors seating 1-6 passengers, similar to a small car. Piston aircraft used for business usually fly short missions of 300-400 miles, utilizing small general aviation airports that often lack air traffic control towers.
Turboprop Aircraft
Turboprop aircraft utilize one or more gas-turbine engines connected to a gearbox that turns the propeller(s). These aircraft are frequently larger than piston-powered aircraft and can carry more payload and passengers at altitudes up to 35,000 feet. Turboprops have lower operating costs than jets due to lower fuel consumption but are slower. They are suitable for businesses needing to fly missions requiring 600-1,000 miles of travel between general aviation airports with runways too short for jets. A typical turboprop interior is the size of a large SUV, seats 6-8 people, and is often configured like a small office.
Jet Aircraft
Jet aircraft have one or more gas-turbine engines, which provide thrust. They use Jet A fuel, fly faster than turboprops, and operate at higher altitudes than pistons or turboprops. They can fly at altitudes below the airlines (20,000-25,000 feet) or above the airlines (above 40,000 feet). Jet sizes and flight ranges vary widely, with some having a single pilot and small cabin, while others can accommodate a meeting environment and fly internationally. The majority seat six passengers in a cabin the size of a large SUV and fly an average stage length of around 1,000 miles. Like turboprops, jet interiors are often configured as small offices. Jets are attractive for businesspeople needing to reach destinations quickly and typically use small community airports.
Helicopters
A helicopter is lifted and propelled by one or more horizontal rotors. They are used for short business aviation flights of less than 100 miles, at altitudes less than 1,000 feet. The interior of a business helicopter typically seats 4-6 people and is configured similar to a small car. Helicopters can land at various heliports and outlying airports, making them attractive to businesspeople.
