PBS Final Exam Review

Management

The cellular structure is governed by specific organelles that handle the direction and production of biological materials. The Nucleus acts as the primary control center for the cell, where it performs the critical function of storing DNADNA. The Mitochondria is the powerhouse responsible for the metabolic processes that generate energy, specifically through the production of ATPATP. Ribosomes serve as the manufacturing units that build biological products, focusing on the synthesis of proteins.

Logistics

The movement of substances across cellular boundaries is categorized into two main forms of transport. Pasoice Transport is defined as the movement of molecules without the requirement of energy, typically progressing from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration. In contrast, Active Transport describes movement that necessitates the expenditure of energy, specifically utilizing ATPATP to facilitate the process.

Quality Control

Biochemical reactions and the structural integrity of biological molecules are vital for cellular health. Enzymes are specialized proteins that function to speed up chemical reactions within the organism. Denaturation is the process describing the loss of shape and function in these molecules, a degradation that occurs due to environmental stressors such as excessive heat or changes in pHpH.

Information Processing

The flow of genetic information involves several distinct stages and potential errors. DNA Replications involve the exact copying of DNADNA. The process of Transcription involves the conversion of genetic code from DNADNA to mRNAmRNA, represented as DNA→mRNADNA \rightarrow mRNA. Translation is the subsequent step where mRIUAmRIUA is translated into Protein, represented by the progression mRIUA→ProteinmRIUA \rightarrow \text{Protein}. Any error occurring within the DNADNA sequence is termed a Motation. These errors include a point mutation, which is characterized as a swap of genetic material, and a Frameshirt mutation, which results in a shift within the genetic code.

Forensic Audit

Forensic science utilizes specific biological markers and post-mortem changes to analyze a subject. Rigor Mortis is the stage where the body stiffens after death. Algor Mortis refers to the process where the body cools to ambient temperature. Liver Mortis involves the pooling of blood in the lower portions of the body. In the laboratory, Restriction Enzymes are employed to cut DNADNA at specific sequences. Gel Electrophoresis is a technique used to sort DNADNA fragments by size, with the principle that small fragments run the fastest through the gel matrix.

Scientific Method

Experimental design relies on clearly defined variables and groups to ensure scientific validity. The Indenpendent cariable is the factor that is specifically changed or manipulated by the researcher. The Dependent variable is the factor that is measured to observe the effects of the change. The Control Group serves as the essential baseline for the experiment, representing the group where no changes are made.
