Tiruvottiyur Tyagayyar
Birth/Origin
- born in 1845 and lived until 1917.
- He was the son of Veena Kuppayar.
- After Tyagaraja came to visit Veena Kuppayur’s house, he was born and hence he was named Tyagayyar.
- Since he was born in Tiruvottiyur like his father he got the name Tiruvottiyur Tyagayyar.
- After, he moved to Mutyalapeta in madras so he got the name Mutyalapeta Tyagayyar.
Contributions
- He was an accomplished musician and composer, like his father.
- He composed keerthanas in ghana ragas and in 108 ragas and published them in a book named “Sankeerthana Ratnavali”.
- He had a collection of Pallavis in a book named “Pallavi Swara Kalpavalli”.
- He was an extraordinary composer for Swara Kalpana.
- Since he was very good at Swara Kalpana, he got the name Swara Simha Tyaggayar.
- Even after his father’s death, he conducted concerts and music where big vidwans were invited to his house.
Devotion to Saint Tyagaraja
- Since Veena Kuppayyar was a disciple of Tyagaraja the entire family had a lot of devotion for him.
- Tyagayyar wanted to praise Saint Tyagaraja with a composition.
- He composed a Kriti in praise of Tyagaraja - “Tyagaraja Sadguruni Dalatu '' in Kharaharapriya raga.
Compositions
- He composed 108 Kritis in Ghana Ragas. Apart from that, he also composed many Varnas, Ragamalikas and Kritis in many Janya and Apurva ragas.
Some important compositions are follows:
Inthamodi Jese - Varnam in raga Saranga and Adi tala. He had many compositions to his credit. Some of the compositions are Intamodijese, Saragunanannelu, and Saraswathi nanneppudu.
Disciples
Some important disciples are Sangita Rao, Devara, Tiger Varadachari, Nellore Raghavaraju, and Piratla Sankarayya. Tiruvayyur Tyagayyar reached the abode of God in the year 1917.
