8.1.1 Korean War 

  • US and Soviet Union agreed to temporarily Split up korea at the 38th parallel at the end of the second world war
    • Communist North Korea supported by the Soviets
    • Capitalist South Korea supported by the US
  • 5 years after the division, Kim II sng attempts to reunify Korea under his control
  • June 25, 1950- Kim launched a surprise invasion of South Korea
    • US President Truman believed it was Soviet Backed
  • within 2 days the US had rallied the UNSC to declare support for South Korea
    • American-Led UN coalition was deployed to Korea
  • In September, Douglas MacArthur would launch a counter-offensive that included landing in territory held by North Korean forces at Inchon.
  • 1953 armistice established a status quo antebellum
