Script for Chinese Mother
I want to talk about the way Chinese parents raise their kids to work super hard and be perfect academically. The author, Amy Chua, argues that Chinese moms believe that pushing their children with discipline, practice, and high expectations is the best way for kids to succeed in life. And honestly, I think there’s some truth to that.
As a Japanese person, I’ve seen a similar approach in my own culture. Japan also values hard work, discipline, and respect for parents. Kids are often expected to focus on school, practice music or sports, and always try to do their best. We believe that effort and perseverance really pay off. So, I agree with Amy Chua that pushing children can help them become confident and successful, especially when they see their own progress and achievement.
But I also think there’s a flip side — like she mentioned, Western parents tend to focus more on making learning fun and encouraging kids to follow their passions. While I see the value in that approach, I sometimes wonder if it might give children a little less resilience or discipline for the tough parts of life.
In Japan, we try to balance both. We push kids to study and work hard, but also want them to enjoy their hobbies and have a happy childhood. I think that striking a good balance would be ideal — because discipline can help you succeed, but happiness and self-esteem matter too.
So, overall, I see both sides. Discipline and effort are really important, but so is enjoying what you do and feeling good about yourself. Finding that middle ground might be the best way forward."
