Drug standards state that all preparation called by the same drug name must be in a uniform strength, quality, purity, and standards.
Over the counter (OTC)= non prescription drugs
Five schedules of controlled substances
CI: high abuse potential and not approved for medical use in the untied states
Examples: heroin, LSD, mescaline, and ecstasy
CII: High abuse potential. May lead to severe dependence. Written prescription only, no phoning in. No refills, new prescription needed.
Morphine, codeine, oxycontin, and demerol
CIII: may lead to moderate dependence. May be refilled five times in six months.
codeine, and anabolic steroids
CIV: Lower abuse potential than the previous schedules. Prescription can be refilled by phone or fax.
Valium, Xanax, ambien
CV: low abuse potential compared to previous schedules. Consists of primarily cough suppressants containing codeine and preparations for diarrhea.
Promethazine with codeine, Cheratussin, Lomotil
The Food and Drug Administration focuses the safety standards in the production of drugs, food, and cosmetics.
The Drug Enforcement Administration focuses only on controlled substances.
