  • HDD 

Slower, breaks over time due to spinning disk. Best used for high storage capacity at a lower cost. 

  • SSD 

Faster boot speeds & app launch. No moving parts meaning it won't break over time. Higher cost per gigabyte. Best used for quick file access/load times and when a budget is less of a concern. 

  • M.2 SATA 

Both types are compact & efficient 

  • M.2 NVMe 

Much faster performance for tasks like loading large apps or transferring big files. 

  • RAM 

Temporary storage that helps run multiple active applications at the same time. Volatile memory, doesn't hold onto contents when it's not powered. Common component that is replaceable in laptops. 

  • Batteries 

Let's a laptop hold power without having to be plugged in. Some are removeable and some are not. 

  • Keyboards 

Let's you type words on both a laptop and a desktop. Idk man it's a keyboard they're obvious 

  • Touchpads 

Laptop's version of a mouse. Compact, supports finger gestures. 

  • Internal Wi-Fi 

Allows access to wireless networks at home, or public places. 

  • Expansion Slots 

It's those slots that the GPU plugs into. Enables device to do more than what it originally could do like better graphics or faster Wi-Fi. 

  • USB-C 

Most commonly used port. Reversible, fast, most specifically used for charging and data transfer. There is no limit to how fast the port itself works. The only limit is the speeds of the device it's connected to. 

  • HDMI 

Most commonly used video cord. Supports both video and audio all in one cord. Mostly used for screen mirroring or projectors. 

  • DisplayPort 

Supports higher resolution and faster refresh rates. More commonly used in professional use, good for daisy chaining multiple monitors. 

  • USB-A 

Traditional rectangular USB port. Still used for peripherals like mice & flash drives. 

  • Audio Jack 

Connects headphones, microphones, or headsets. 

  • Ethernet Port 

Wired ethernet. Faster speeds because you're connected directly to the router. 

  • SD Card Reader 

Allows you to download stuff without needing an internet connection. 

  • Helpful for importing photos or expanding storage. 

 

  • What should you do before replacing a laptop's storage?

  • Capacitive Touchscreens 

Uses electromagnetic properties of the human body to register input. Supports finger gestures. 

  • Resistive Touchscreens 

Uses two thin layers—when pressed together, it's registered as input. Supports stylus', gloved hands, more commonly found in work environments. 

 

  • Accelerometer 

Detects when a device is rotated and shaken, changes phone screen from landscape to portrait. Good for fitness tracking. 

  • Gyroscope 

Detects how a device is rotated. Like how that tower in Angry Birds AR could stay centered in the screen while you moved your phone camera around it. 

 

  • Proximity Sensor 

Detects when something within close proximity to the screen. Turns off input & screen. Most likely your face during a call or to keep the device off it' screen-side down on a surface. 

  • Ambient Light 

Automatically adjusts screen brightness depending on the brightness of the environment. Dark = darker screen. Light = brighter screen. 

 

  • Fn Keys 

Secondary input option on a keyboard. Allows keys to do more than one thing. Like how Fn + Z turns the Z button into a power button. 

  • Backlit Keyboards 

Good for when you're using a keyboard with low visibility. Commonly used with gamers when they're trying to get good aesthetics. 

  • Gestures 

Allows you to do more than just point and click with a trackpad. You can zoom, change tabs, etc. 

 

  • Thunderbolt 

Looks identical to a USB-C with the difference being a small lightning bolt logo on the port. Basically just a USB-C, but on crack. Faster charging speeds, data transfer, essentially just everything a USB-C can do, but faster. 

  • SD Readers

  • Transfer data between devices without relying on cloud services or internet access 

 

  • Physical SIM 

Removable plastic card. Holds personal data. 

  • eSIM 

Soldered chip. Also holds personal stuff. 

  • Faster setup, remote provisioning, switch carriers or plans without needing to physically replace anything 

 

 

  • Wi-Fi Tethering 

Turns your phone into an access point. You can connect your laptop to it and shit.

  • USB tethering 

Enables Wi-Fi via cord from one device to another. 

  • Direct, wired connection between mobile device & computer 

 

  • Bluetooth tethering 

It's both of these things, but slower and consumes less battery. 

 

  • Airplane Mode 

Disables all forms of cellular communication. Good for when your device connected to LTE is constantly trying to search for a G connection. 

  • Roaming 

Using a carrier's network while you’re not connected to the internet. Comes at a price, though. 

  • Connects to a network outside of the user's home carrier 

 

APN Settings 

  • Determines how the device connects to the internet & sends multimedia messages via the mobile network

 

  • LTE 

    • Dominant 4G standard 

    • Dependable speeds suitable for most activities 

    • Good for urban & rural environments 

    • Power efficient 

 

  • 5G 

Faster internet speeds, but slower range and low penetration. 

  • Better speed, latency, & device capacity 

  • Supports data heavy activities 

  • Faster speeds, shorter range. Lower penetration thru buildings 

 

  • MDM 

It's basically the "invisible guardian." It prevents devices from accessing certain things, protecting it from viruses and theft. 

  • Centralized place that puts a layer of security on devices 

  • ITs can remote wipe or lock devices remotely 

  • Ensures enterprise data is safe and doesn't disrupt productivity or have to constantly oversee it 

 

  • Policies 

Ensures devices will stay within the rules created for said MDM.  

  • App Control 

Forces devices to have certain apps downloaded by default without the ability to remove them, & what can & can't be download. 

  • Updates 

Automatically updates devices during not peak hours simultaneously. Ensures they all stay up-to-date & protected. 

 

  • BYOD 

Bring-Your-Own-Device. Allows workers to work with an organization from their personally owned devices without their privacy being invaded and without the organization not having control, all on the same device. 

  • Profile Separation 

One profile can freely use messaging apps, photos, and private content, one is for exclusively work-related content without any affliction on either profile. 

  • Work Profile 

Controlled by the organization. Contents can be remotely altered or even wiped. 

  • Personal Profile 

Organization cannot see the contents of this profile. Here, you can freely use messaging apps, photos, or really any content that is unrelated to work. 

 

  • Device Enrollment 

Adds the device to the MDM.  

  • Certificates 

Basically the devices "passport." 

  • Secure communication & authentication, acts like a "digital passport" 

  • Geolocation 

Shows admins where a device is in real-time. Helps prevent theft. 

 

  • Data Synchronization 

Allows the contents of one device to be automatically added and/or updated—and match—to another device. 

 

  • Local Sync 

Manually add data to a device. Good for larger, more important data. 

  • Transfer data directly between devices using a USB cable, Bluetooth, or over a local network 

  • Doesn't require internet 

  • Faster & more secure 

  • More private, less flexible, more technical involvement 

  • Cloud Sync 

Automatically synchronizes with devices. Higher threat risk, though, meaning it's more ideal for stuff that doesn't matter as much like cross-saving a video game. 

  • Relies on internet-connected servers 

  • Automatic & in real-time 

  • Instant access to data regardless of location 

  • Depends on stable internet access 

  • Hybrid Approach 

Use local for important stuff & cloud for less important stuff. 

  • Local sync for sensitive or large files, cloud sync for everyday content
