Notes on Naming Ionic Compounds
Structure of Ionic Compounds
- Ionic compounds consist of a metal (first) and a nonmetal (second).
- Naming order follows the periodic table: the element farther to the left comes first.
Prefixes for Number of Atoms
- Used to indicate the number of atoms in the compound.
- Examples of prefixes:
- Mono (1)
- Di (2)
- Tri (3)
- Tetra (4)
- Penta (5)
- Hexa (6)
Examples
- For a compound like {\text{BR}}3{\text{O}}8:
- First prefix (3) yields "tr", and second prefix (8) yields "octo".
- Combine to form "Trioctoxide".
- Note: sometimes part of prefixes or element names is dropped for phonetics.
