Unit 1: American Revolution (4, 5, 6) EXPAND Time Period: 1775-1777 Similarities and differences between the major participants of European colonization of North America (Britain, France, Spain) Britain: Land from the Atlantic to the Appalachians. Crowded. Oh wow look the colonies are manufacturing things and half supporting themselves! Still really dependent on imports Their colonies’ prosperity really depends on the demands of the European market more than anything France: Across the Midwest. Lonely. Traded a lot w/Indians: guns, furs, wheat, manufactured goods. Goal to protect Caribbean islands, did not focus on econ. Development Metis: mixed French/NA race. Not many french people in America so they had to trade and respect the cultures of the NAs. They often married each other so metis would be their children and also intermediaries. They want gold They were Britain’s main competitor due to their massive fort collection along the Mississippi river that threatened the safety of the British colonies Spain: Around Mexico and Texas. Also got Florida. Lonely. presidios/missions Encomienda system: basically a way of enslaving the native americans so that they would work for profit. Many died of disease. They want gold But all those indians moved into Ohio Country, which the rich Virginians want
