Verbos regulares (Capítulo 2)

There are three types of verbs in Spanish:

  • Verbs that end in -ar

  • Verbs that end in -er

And

  • Verbs that end in -ir

Most -ar, -er, and -ir verbs’ conjugations follow a pattern:

  • Using the verb hablar (to speak) as an example, -ar verbs conjugate into the following:

    • Yo hablo - I speak

    • hablas - You speak

    • Él/ella/usted habla - He, she speaks/You speak

    • Nosotros hablamos - We speak

    • Ellos/ellas/ustedes hablan - They/you speak

  • Using the verb comer (to eat) an an example, -er verbs conjugate into the following:

    • Yo como - I eat

    • comes - You eat

    • Él/ella/usted come - He, she eats/you eat

    • Nosotros comemos - We eat

    • Ellos/ellas/ustedes comen - They/eat eat

  • Using the verb escribir (to live) as an example, -ir verbs conjugate into the following:

    • Yo escribo - I live

    • escribes - You live

    • Él/ella/usted escribe - He, she lives/you live

    • Nosotros escribimos - We live

      • Nosotros is the only -ir verb conjugation that differentiates from the -er verb conjugations.

    • Ellos/ellas/ustedes escriben - They/you live

If a verb does en in -ar, -er, or -ir, it is an infinitive (to + verb).

  • Hablar - To speak

  • Comer - To eat

  • Vivir - To live

These verbs are unconjugated and only used as objects or subjects.

  • Yo necesito hacer la tarea. - I need to do homework.

  • Patinar es difícil. - Skating is difficult.
