Cardiovascular System Overview
The cardiovascular system comprises the heart, blood vessels, and lymphatic vessels.
All structures within these systems possess an internal lining composed of simple squamous epithelium, technically referred to as the endothelium.
Vessels are generally categorized as follows:
Arteries: Vessels that conduct blood away from the heart. There are three primary types: elastic arteries, muscular arteries, and arterioles.
Veins: Vessels that return blood to the heart. There are three primary types: venules, small-to-medium veins, and large veins.
Capillaries: The smallest vessels in the system, formed primarily from endothelium. Larger vessels incorporate additional layers of connective tissue (CT) and muscle.

General Structure of Blood Vessels
Blood vessels are classified based on their size, the nature of the tissues involved, and the abundance of those tissues within the vessel walls. Larger vessels share a common structural plan consisting of three concentric layers known as tunics:
Tunica Intima:
This is the innermost layer consisting of the endothelial lining that faces the lumen.
It includes the lamina propria and layers of loose subendothelial connective tissue.
Tunica Media:
The middle layer consisting of alternating bands of smooth muscle, elastic fibers, and reticular fibers.
Tunica Adventitia:
The outermost layer made of connective tissue (predominantly collagen).
Its function is to anchor the vessel to the surrounding organs.
Comparative Anatomy: Arteries vs. Veins
Shape:
Arteries generally maintain a round, concentric shape.
Veins typically appear collapsed or irregular in shape.
Lumen and Walls:
Arteries have thicker walls and smaller lumens relative to veins.
Veins have thinner walls and larger lumens relative to arteries.
Tunic Dominance:
In Arteries, the Tunica Media is usually the thickest layer.
In Veins, the Tunica Adventitia is usually the thickest layer.
Elastic Membranes:
Large muscular arteries feature an External Elastic Lamina that separates the TM from the TA.
Large Vessel Specializations:
Large veins contain both smooth muscle and connective tissue within the adventitial layer.

Shape: Round.

Detailed Analysis of Arterial Varieties
Elastic Arteries (e.g., Aorta):
Under magnification (HE stain), the Aorta shows distinct Intima, Media, and Adventitia.
Tunica Intima consists of simple squamous endothelium supported by subendothelial CT containing elastic fibers, collagen, and fibroblasts.
Tunica Media is very thick, characterized by darkly-stained elastic fibers intermingled with eosinophilic smooth muscle cells.
Tunica Adventitia contains vasa vasorum ("vessels of the vessel") and nervi vasorum (nerves of the vessel) to nourish and innervate the thick wall.
Muscular Arteries (Distributing Arteries):
Tunica Intima: Thinner than in elastic arteries; contains a prominent, retractile Internal Elastic Lamina.
Tunica Media: Contains up to $40$ layers of smooth muscle cells which produce the extracellular ground substance. It also contains collagen fibers and minimal elastic material.
Tunica Adventitia: Contains fibroblasts, collagen, elastic fibers, and occasionally adipose cells. It is thicker than the TA found in elastic arteries. Large muscular arteries have a distinct External Elastic Lamina.
Arterioles:
Known for a distinctive pattern: endothelial cells are oriented longitudinally, while smooth muscle fibers in the TM are wrapped circularly.
The TM consists of no more than $1$ to $2$ layers of smooth muscle.
Capillaries and Sinusoids
Capillaries:
Occur as the most numerous and smallest vessels.
Completely lack a muscular tunic; composed only of endothelial cells and their basement membranes.
Specifically identified by endothelial cell nuclei and the presence of pericytes.
Sinusoids:
These are specialized capillaries found in the liver, spleen, and bone marrow.
Post Capillary Venules:
Transition points following the capillary bed; larger lumen than capillaries but structurally similar.
Venous System Detail
Venules:
Function to drain capillaries.
Characterized by endothelial tubes and basement membrane surrounded by small amounts of CT.
Lack defined Tunica Media and Tunica Adventitia layers.
Small and Medium Sized Veins:
Tunica Intima is almost non-existent.
Tunica Media is thin with sparse smooth muscle.
Tunica Adventitia is the thickest layer and is loose at the periphery. Valves may be present to prevent backflow.
Large Veins:
Tunica Intima: Endothelium and a small amount of CT.
Tunica Media: Circularly arranged smooth muscle with interspersed CT.
Tunica Adventitia: The thickest layer; contains CT and longitudinally arranged smooth muscle. The presence of vasa vasorum in the adventitia is a key identifying marker for large veins.
Lymphatic Vessels
Function: These vessels drain excess fluid from extracellular (EC) spaces, including proteins, ingested fats, microorganisms, and antigenic material.
Structure:
Blind-ending vessels consisting of a single thin layer of flattened endothelial cells.
Possess a much larger and more irregular lumen compared to blood capillaries.
Lack the muscle in the wall that would be found in a companion vein of comparable size.
Like veins, they contain valves to ensure one-way flow.
Specialized Structures and Histology Examples
Vasa Vasorum: Literally "vessel of the vessel." These are small blood vessels that supply the outer layers (adventitia and media) of large blood vessels where oxygen cannot diffuse from the main lumen.

Measurements: Scale markers for identification include and contexts for distinguishing vessel diameters.
