1.1 General Divisions of the Nervous System

There are 2 Nervous systems in the human body: The Central Nervous System (CNS) and The Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)

• CNS contains: The brain (encephalon) which is encapsulated by the skull (cranium), the Spinal Cord which lies within the spinal canal. The retina and it’s optic nerve

• PNS contains: Nerves from the brain (cranial nerves) and nerves from the spinal cord (spinal nerves)
