Superlatives in Spanish Grammar
Definition: Superlatives indicate extremes within a group (e.g., tallest, least playful).
Structure: For the superlative form, use:
EL/LA/LOS/LAS (NOUN) + MÁS (ADJECTIVE) + DE (GROUP/PLACE)- Example: Garfield es el más gordo de mis gatos. (Garfield is the fattest of my cats.)
Least: To indicate the least of a quality, use:
EL/LA/LOS/LAS (NOUN) + MENOS (ADJECTIVE) + DE (GROUP/PLACE)- Example: Carlos y Elisa son los menos serios de todos. (Carlos and Elisa are the least serious of all.)
Irregular Forms:
- mejor (best), peor (worst), mayor (oldest), menor (youngest).
- Examples:
- el mejor (the best)
- el peor (the worst)
- el mayor (the oldest with people)
- el menor (the youngest with people)
Absolute Superlative: To express "very, very" or "extremely", add:
-ísimo / -ísima / -ísimos / -ísimas- Drop the last vowel if the adjective ends in a vowel.
- Example: grandísimos (from grande).
- Sentence Example: Mi gata Condesa tiene los ojos grandísimos. (My cat, Condesa, has extremely large eyes.)
